Dirty Springwash Shower Gel

Although Dirty Springwash Shower Gel is marketed slightly more towards men, Lush have never been a company to pigeon-hole scents specifically into 'male/female only' categories. I suspect that Dirty is probably a catalyst product, used to attract those hesitant male consumers, who may see Lush as strictly female and pass off buying from them.

What is rather unique about the Dirty scent is that it is a line of products that Lush produces, from soap and shower gels to hair cream and perfumes. Lush usually focuses on stand alone products, so it is quite rare that they have several different products with the identical scent around at the same time.

Initially I wasn't that interested in trying Dirty Springwash as I'm not particularly enamoured by mint-scented products. However, I needed a small bottle of shower gel to take on my holiday and felt it was a good opportunity to try something new...

The shower gel is cool and refreshingly minty; reminiscent of the initial scent you get when unwrapping spearmint chewing gum. Unlike other mint products I've tried, the scent here is both fresh and light, not the acidic, overwhelming fragrance that you get with most other mint-scented cosmetics.

Dirty Springwash boasts bicarbonate of soda as one of its ingredients, which apparently can help soften hard water. Whether or not this is true, I'm unsure, but it did leave my skin really clean and soft to the touch. It also contains spearmint and menthol crystals which makes your skin feel cool in a hot shower - perfect for using after a workout at the gym or during the hotter months to help eradicate that 'sticky' feeling. The addition of menthol also creates a tingling effect on the skin, which eases sore muscles and stimulates the mind.
The shower gel itself is medium in consistency, so you have to be careful when getting it out the bottle - I learnt the hard way with The Olive Branch, when I ended up losing almost half a bottle with a single squirt. However, unlike the aforementioned gel, Dirty does lather up very nicely so you don't have to use too much each time.

The only negative aspect about this shower gel, something I have read from other reviews and not from experience, is that it's apparently very one-dimensional when compared to it's Dirty counterparts. Other Lushies have commented that the gel is missing the complexity of the perfume, which supposedly has herbal elements and a more pronounced menthol undertone as well.
Although I could only pick up the spearmint scent when using the shower gel, I actually found this to be to the product's advantage. Sometimes companies (Lush included), can over-complicated scents and release products that feel and smell heavy because there's too much 'going on'. Dirty Springwash is a simple fragrance, which is probably why it feels so light on your skin.

Overall, I was really impressed with Dirty. The shower gel leaves you feeling clean, minty fresh and invigorated; it's a great product to come home to after a long day at work. It's soft on the skin and is delicately scented meaning that you can either enjoy the spearmint fragrance throughout the day, or use your own scent and not worry it'll be overshadowed by this one. I can definitely see myself using this product again in the future.

  1. Dirty is my "back up" shower gel because it smells fresh, gets the job done and you don't have to use too much in order to wash yourself. The smell is uplifting but not overpowering. Glad you enjoyed it, too. :)
