Twilight Shower Gel

I began collecting Lush stuff a few months before the Christmas 2012 range came into the shops, and initially it was their shower gels that I was most interested in collecting. It might seem like a strange interest, given that Lush are probably best known for their bath bombs, not to mention the fact that they have so many amazing products on offer. However, there's something alluring and incredibly sexy about those colourful little bottles full of weird and wonderful smells; it reminds me a little bit of the BFG and his bottles of dreams.

So when I first purchased a small bottle of Twilight Shower Gel, I initially bought it because it was another product to add to my collection. On sniffing it when it arrived, I remember thinking that it smelt alright, although I have never been a fan of lavender smelling cosmetics, so I wasn't overly keen. However, that all changed when I used it for the first time last week. I was amazed at how much I loved it!

Lush state that this shower gel contains lavender infusion and essential oil to calm and relax both the mind and the skin. This is coupled with tonka to add notes of vanilla and fruit to it's scent, and benzoin to give it a sweet balsamic quality. I don't know whether it's the tonka or the benzoin that did it for me, but something in this gel turned it from what could have been a typical lavender smelling bath product, to a magnificent shower experience.

Whereas most lavender products are often very harsh smelling to me, Twilight has a silky sweet overtone which dampens the lavender smell slightly and gives it a gorgeous sweet smelling scent. In fact, ever since I have started using this gel, I have been haunted by the knowledge that I have smelt something like this before, when I was a child, in a local sweet shop.

Despite what other reviews have said, this shower gel did not dry out or irritate my skin in anyway. In fact, since I began using this, I have noticed a vast improvement in the quality of the skin on my legs. They have managed to keep both smooth and supple throughout the cold weather, without the use of other potions and lotions.

The only complaint I have about this shower gel, is when comparing it to other gels in the Lush range, it doesn't lather up as easily or as much as others do. This means that I often have to use more of the product than I would if it was, say, Snow Fairy.

On their site, Lush state that 'the period between sundown and nightfall is often called the blue hour, because of its distinctive ambient light.' They have tried to recreate this moment by turning this gel into a rich, deep blue purple shower gel, with a twinkling of stars added in the form of silver glitter.

Although I wouldn't say it portrays this vision very well, it is still an extremely gorgeous looking gel, and one that works as a perfect companion on a bitter, cold night.

I'm so glad I bought a large 500g bottle when it was featured in the after-Christmas sale, as I'd be disheartened if I knew I had to wait a whole 12 months before I could get my hands on anymore.

  1. Hi Jen - I absolutely LOVE Twilight, infact it's my favourite shower gel ever. However.. I went into my local Lush store today and was really gutted to find out that they're only releasing Twilight this year for Halloween as a small 100ml bottle within a gift set. :(

I'm so upset about the fact that they kept making this product so elusive, it's easily one of their most popular products ever and needs to be permanent.

    1. Only just seen this comment but I completely agree! It's so frustrating when they only release products for a day or two when they're good enough to be regulars. There are lots of Lush products that would sell really well as regulars (Ghost shower gel, Twilight, Ponche etc...) but you just know they'd never bring them out a permanent members!

    1. Hi there - did you manage to get any in the Kitchen? If you're still looking, you can purchase the Relax gift set which features a small 100g bottle of the stuff :)

  4. i do like this scent Shower gel, but I have 2 quick questions.
In the kitchen, can you buy this in 500ml bottles?
    2. is it worth buying some on ebay? You can find it sort of cheap, but i wonder if it would be worth buying it off ebay to tide me over until the next kitchen release.

    1. Hi there - unfortunately, the Kitchen only offer 250g bottles of this shower gel and any other they bring out - they seem to have stopped the limited edition 500g bottles. I would definitely recommend that you purchase some off of eBay as long as you don't pay an extortionate amount. It's one of my favourite shower gels and I couldn't imagine being completely out of it.

  5. Tell you what, I got a small sample of this from my local Lush, as there was a Relax gift open, and the bottle was only half full. I tried it, and didn't like it much, because I didn't think the lavender was strong enough. Then, this weekend, I noticed they had heaps of gifts, so I bought a relax one to give it another go. HOLY COW. I'm obsessed. I've been using it every night this week before I sleep, and while I don't know if it is helping me sleep, I love smelling of lavender before bed.
My only complaint, is because I'm in AUS, I can't get it from the ruddy kitchen! I'd give anything to have a few bottles to put away, but I just can't afford the shipping here for a 1L equivalent :( I'll keep buying the relax gift every month or so (even though I don't like the smell of Phoenix Rising), but I just wish it were easier to obtain for those of us without access to a Kitchen. Oh well. I can dream

  6. I decided to see what you said about this as I bought it today. I love this bit: "initially it was their shower gels that I was most interested in collecting. It might seem like a strange interest, given that Lush are probably best known for their bath bombs.." Who knew that the Lush community would become so SG-obsessed?!

Excellent review, thank you for having it up!

  7. Dear Jen, I too am a huge twilight shower gel fan, and the only place I can find it is in the relax gift set. I've been buying the set, but I don't have a tub, so I end up giving the bath bombs away, so now the shower gel is becoming an expensive endeavour. I have been watching the Lush Kitchen in the UK for it to pop up, and the one time it did, it was already sold out. I've also tried buying it on EBAY, but with the Canadian dollar being so low it's crazy expensive. Do you know of any other way to find this gem?
    Thanks so much

    1. Hi lovely – I cannot promise you anything but I did buy two bottles of Twilight shower gel that were meant for another person but I am unsure whether or not they are still interested. Once I've sorted out my messages on Instagram, I will message them back and ask them. If they no longer want them, I am more than willing to sell them to you at the retail price.
