Happy Pill Bath Bomb

Happy Pill was actually one of the first Lush products I heard about, back when I wasn't even aware of who or what Lush were. I remember meeting one of my friend's girlfriends at the time, who couldn't stop talking about a shower gel called Sonic Death Monkey and something called a Happy Pill Ballistic. Needless to say, I remained polite throughout the whole conversation but had forgotten about it the next day. Many years later, I find myself buying multiple numbers of both products during a retro haul, and wondering how many other amazing products I have missed out on for not jumping on the bandwagon when she did.

What's magical about Happy Pill, is that it's a compilation of two very special Lush fragrances; the yellow half shares it's scent with the refreshing Happy Hippy Shower Gel, whereas the orange half takes on the mandarin elements of The Olive Branch. Together they produce a fruity zesty cocktail of loveliness - one that is sure to brighten up your evening on any occasion.

What you'll first notice about this ballistic, is that it doesn't take on the shape or dimensions of a traditional Lush bath bomb; a fact that perhaps makes it slightly more appealing. Furthermore, this product is far bigger and heavier than a regular ballistic, making it great value for money; you could easily separate this bomb in half and have two luxury baths.

The ingredients for the bath ballistic are grapefruit, bergamot, frankincense, orange, lemon and mandarin. Combined, these create a fresh, hefty citrusy scent that aides a calm and relaxing experience - it's definitely one of the strongest bath bombs I've used in a while.

Once in the water, the ballistic begins to foam-up immediately, although it is a slow-fizzing bath bomb and took almost 20 minutes to completely dissolve in the water. For quicker results, you may wish to break Happy Pill into half or quarters, but there's no reason why you couldn't get in the bath whilst it's still working it's magic and enjoy the show from a front-row seat.

The bath water turns a beautiful shade of golden honey, and unlike most of Lush's regular bath bombs, this one has the added luxury of making the water silky soft, due, no doubt, to the addition of olive oil in the ingredients list. The water felt lovely and creamy, and left me feeling really invigorated and refreshed - the light zesty scent really wakes you up.

Once I was out of the water, my skin felt clean, soft and reenergised, and the mandarin and lemon scent lingered on my skin for hours afterwards. After bathing I noticed a vast improvement in the condition of my skin; it felt silky smooth, soft and smelt wonderful. After a bath or a shower I always apply a moisturiser to my skin, however, I didn't need to do this with Happy Pill as my skin felt really moisturised and hydrated.

Unfortunately, once fully dissolved, I thought this bath smelt almost exactly like Cif bathroom cleaner. Although, it was still a very pleasant bath, I couldn't stop imagining the acidic smell of Cif, which spoilt it a little for me and leads me to score it five out of six for this reason. I wish that The Olive Branch was more prominent in the mix.

Ultimately, this is a wonderful fresh ballistic that would appeal equally to men and women. It's good value for money and has many appealing factors that make it stand above a lot of Lush's other bath bombs. I'll be stocking up on these when Lush next bring them back.

Happy Thoughts Bath Oil

Although I love my job and wouldn't want to be doing anything different (aside from being a rock star of course!), there are times when I find it difficult to see the positive in what I'm trying to achieve. When I'm swamped with endless paperwork, dealing with a challenging child or just juggling the many pressures of being a teacher, I often come home feeling rather solemn - not the greatest predicament to find yourself in if you're hoping for a good night's rest.

Lush is such a great form of escapism, and I'm sure many of you will agree that the company have probably been a much-needed life raft at times. While some people would argue that it's just a bath - how could it possibly be deemed as anything more than water and a bunch of smells? However, there have been moments in my lifetime when that thirty minute experience has thwarted  emotional breakdowns and allowed me to function when it would have otherwise been impossible.

Happy Thoughts Bath Oil has been designed to bring out the best in people - encouraging and inspiring a more positive approach to life and supporting your body and mind when that just isn't possible. Packed full of skin-softening butters and uplifting oils, this miniature ball is like summer condensed into a bath melt.

As with all of Lush's new melts and oils, this one contains a generous helping of shea and cocoa butter - two ingredients that not only help to nourish and condition your body but work together to help the skin absorb the added moisture and get the most out of this product. There's no denying that this little ball is a powerhouse for the skin - making an impression that'll last you the entire day.

With Brazilian orange oil and neroli, this refreshing product has a wonderfully bright and uplifting fruity fragrance - one that expands and increasings when in contact with the hot water. What is interesting about Happy Thoughts is that it has a smell very similar to the Lust family - a strong 'jasmine-sque' scent that you wouldn't initial expect when looking at the ingredients.

This bath oil is definitely more than just an orange one - if anything, the neroli is slightly stronger in the mix so it smells like a strong blossom with homage to the floral elements of jasmine. Whereas a product such as Pumice Powder offers a more sherbet orange aroma, this is definitely more of a fruity, floral fragrance.

When dropped into water, this ball of essential oils takes quite a while to get to work - slowly releasing little puddles of orange that paint the surface of the water. Once the bath oil has completely dispersed, the whole water turns a very pale orange colour and most of the oils dissolve into the water, allowing them to permeate your skin whilst you are submerged.

While it's very nourishing on the skin and left my body feeling very soft and well-moisturised, I was disappointed to discover that some of the droplets of oil did not fully dissolve. While this didn't leave my feeling particularly greasy, it did mean that these oils tended to congregate around the outside of the bath and when I drained the water, I was left with a stained tub. Although the damage of this bath oil is not anywhere near as extreme as the original Razzle Dazzle Bath Oil, it did leave me having to spend time scrubbing away the evidence afterwards which was rather frustrating.

What did impress me was that the fragrance of this remained prominent throughout the whole bath, and although I wasn't able to detect it very strongly on my skin afterwards, I could still smell it around the house for a few hours after draining away the water.

Although it's definitely not my favourite bath oil from the new collection and it's one of the only ones I've had issues with in terms of the 'mess' is creates afterwards, I would still consider buying it again and using it as part of a cocktail. This would work really well with both Uluru Bath Bomb and Dragon's Egg to create the perfect summer cocktail.

Quantitative Ingredients: Organic Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii butter), Fair Trade Organic Cocoa Butter (Theobroma cacao), Laureth 4, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glyceriders & PEG-60 Almond Glycerides, Perfume, Brazilian Orange Oil (Citrus sinensis), Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (Cocoa nucifera), Radiant Gold Lustre (Potassium Aluminium Silicate, Colour 77491), Titanium Dioxide, Organic Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis), Neroli Oil (Citrus Aurantium amara), Colour 19140:1, Colour 425410, Colour 45410:2, Colour 47005:1, Soft Pink and Orange Lustre.

Miles Of Smiles Toothy Tabs

One of the most appealing aspects about Lush's range of toothy tabs is that they offer you not only a collection of flavours that are far more interesting than the generic mint variations you'd expect from toothpaste, but that the flavours themselves are so far removed from anything you'd ever concoct yourself. Who in their right mind would suggest a charcoal and chilli flavoured toothpaste? A lemon and black pepper one to boot?

So when I first picked up a bottle of Miles And Smiles Toothy Tabs, I cannot say that I was particularly enthused about trying them out - not because they didn't sound nice, just that they sounded pretty boring in comparison to the other tabs that were sitting right next door to these. If I wanted mint, surely it would be easier for me to head down to my local pharmacy...

However, as the saying goes - sometimes the original really is the best, and why change something when it doesn't need fixing. While some people may argue that toothy tabs are supposed to be an alternative to mint tooth paste (why release a flavour that is redundant to begin with?), I happen to think that these are a great starting point for those unsure whether or not to make that leap. Furthermore, they're also far more natural than a lot of the tube varieties currently available and are much easier to take with you when travelling.

As with all of Lush's new toothy tabs, these particular tabs feature a number of ingredients that I was unsure about and had to research before trying them out for myself - not only to understand how and why Miles Of Smiles work, but also to educate others about the benefits they possess. Firstly, these tabs feature  dicalcium phosphate anhydrous - the main component used to help supplement the body's calcium intake, not to mention preventing the build up of tartar in the mouth. Sorbitol is also used - a natural alternative to sugar which allows Lush to add flavour to this product without adding anything that'll rot your teeth; Lauroyl Sarcosine not only helps the product to foam up in the mouth, but is also used to remove unwanted bacteria that may cause problems in the future.

Described as possessing a 'triple peppermint' flavour, I was expecting these toothy tabs to be overwhelmingly strong, almost to the point of burning my mouth. And when I popped one in my mouth for the first time, the first initial second confirmed this theory. However, I found out very quickly that the mint is nowhere near as potent as you would expect it to be. While some peppermint toothpastes can burn your tongue if you put too much on your brush, you won't get this with these tabs.

What is great about Miles Of Smiles is that the peppermint does clean out your mouth very effectively - leaving you with fresh breath and a set of teeth that feel really squeaky-clean. However, the mint isn't overly strong that it rips the tastebuds right out of your mouth - a positive attribute that makes these little tablets stand above most of the toothpastes that I've tried over the years.

This bottle provides you with enough tabs to see you through a good 1-2 months. While it works out a little more expensive than the tooth paste varieties you can buy in your local pharmacist, I really love the fact that these do everything you'd expect from a toothpaste but without the unbearably strong mint aroma. This will be a regular purchase for me.

Quantitative Ingredients: Dicalcium Phosphate Anhydrous, Sodium Bicarbonate, Cream Of Tartar (Potassium bitartrate), Sorbitol, Lauroyl Sarcosine, Kaolin, English Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita), Organic Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita), Wild Mint Oil (Mentha Arvensis), Sodium saccharin, Limonene, Linalool, Flavour.

I Am A Radiant Being Bath Oil

It's no surprise that this was one of the first bath melts that I naturally gravitated towards on my initial visit to the Oxford Street store. Carved from a bright pink mould and presented in the shape of a miniature star, this bath oil appealed to the child within and I couldn't help but scoop up a handful to bring home with me.

I Am A Radiant Being is a great mantra for all of those who are perhaps feeling a little overtired or stressed - the very predicament I find myself in almost daily unfortunately. With a collaboration of ingredients to not only make this product a highly refreshing experience but one that is equally as warming and comforting on the body and soul, this oil is the perfect bathing companion.

Featuring Sicilian lemon oil, geranium and rose oils, this bath melt offers a sweet, fruity floral aroma - one that is very similar in scent to Rose Jam but with an extra burst of lemony goodness. Its fragrance reminds me of opening a fresh box of Turkish Delight and picking up the smell of the rose flavoured chunks as well as the lemon pieces.

What is great about this particular melt is that it has a hard outer shell with a slightly softer middle - meaning that this withstands the heat a little better than a lot of the other melts. Whereas something like The Sun or Lime Pastille tends to melt between your fingers and leaves a sticky residue wherever it's stored, this bath oil doesn't do this, which is handy.

As if the scent wasn't enough to bowl you over, this beauty is packed full of essential butters and oils to nourish your skin and leave you feeling as soft as a baby. With shea butter and cocoa butter to moisture and condition, I Am A Radiant Being will leave you positively glowing and your skin summer-ready.

As with all of lush's bath melts and oils, this one is effective enough to be used by itself, or if you'd rather, you could combine it with a bath bomb to pad out the fragrance and add extra softening powers to the water. Something like Rose Queen or Sakura would work well with this.
In the tub, this product immediately begins to bleed out across the surface - releasing little puddles of vivid pink colour etched with silver glitter. What is impressive about this particular bath oil is that creates patterns very similar to Razzle Dazzle - making your tub look like a lava lamp with all of the swirls of oil on the surface.

These streams of colour disperse and slowly dissolve into the water so you don't have to worry about getting greasy marks up the side of the bath tub, or more importantly yourself. Once the bath oil had completely dispersed, the whole water turns a lovely baby pink colour and the smell radiates across the whole bathroom - lasting throughout the entire experience and leaving a gentle impression on your skin.

Overall, I Am A Radiant Being left my skin feeling really soft and well-nourished - a benefit that was noted pretty quickly after I had submerged myself under the water. It's one I would use again - by itself as well as part of a cocktail and think it makes a great addition to the Lush family.

Quantitative Ingredients: Organic Shea Butter, Fair Trade Organic Cocoa Butter, Laureth 4, PEG-6 Caprylic / Capric Glycerides & PEG-60 Almond Glycerides, Perfume, Sicilian Lemon Oil, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Geranium oil, Rose Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Citral, Citronellol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool, Snowflake Lustre, Colour 45410, Colour 17200, Colour 45410:2, Colour 77510.

Hairy Mcclairy Solid Shampoo

When it comes to purchasing products from Lush that I have never tried before, I usually only research into whether or not the item is vegan and buy it on this information alone. Often I appreciate the surprises that come from not knowing much about an item, and in most cases this mystery has served me well.

When I acquired a rather large chunk of Hairy Mcclairy Solid Shampoo, I knew next to nothing about what its fragrance was or what type of hair it was supposed to cater for. So I was rather surprised then when I read the label that came with the piece and discovered its main purpose aside from washing hair.

With the tagline 'ward off the scary', I really didn't know what to expect - envisaging that Lush had probably created a shampoo bar to help counteract major frizzy hair or something of that nature. What I discovered however was that this exclusive product had in fact been created to keep insects away during the warmer months.

Featuring key ingredients to encourage mosquitos, nits and other pesky insects to stay away, Hairy Mcclairy is supposed to prevent 'small guests from moving into your main' and 'ensure they don't linger' and cause a nuisance. While I can honestly say that I have never had a problem with creatures setting up home on my head, I can see this being great for those who either dislike bugs full stop or sprint off in the opposite direction when a wasp tries to make an emergency landing on their forehead.

Containing a combination of lemon, lime and ylang ylang oil, this shampoo has an incredible fragrance - one that would work so well as either a shower gel or a body lotion. When dry, this product has a scent that reminds me of old-fashioned pear drops - a gentle, sweet and slightly sugary fruity aroma - one that is slightly powdery on the senses but nevertheless beautiful.

When being used in the shower, the aroma intensifies and it is then that you can smell the slightly liquorice scent of the star anise and the gentle floral element of the moringa powder. Together, these ingredients create a shampoo that would easily make my top five favourite smelling list when it comes to hair care.

While the smell is something of an indulgence on the senses, the productivity and effectiveness of this shampoo is even more impressive. As with all of Lush's other solid shampoos, you can either massage it through wet hair, or rub it between your hands and create a lather, which can then be applied to your locks. Either way, you can really tell how much shampoo is compacted into a single bar as it lathers up really easily but takes forever to shrink in size.

Unlike Odango Solid Shampoo, this one creates a surplus amount of thick, creamy lather to massage across your scalp and hair. For this reason, you don't have to keep using this as a simple few seconds will amass enough product to clean your whole head of hair with.

While it doesn't make your hair feel as instantly soft and glossy like other shampoo bars have been known to do, my hair was definitely really manageable and rather shiny once it had fully dried. Furthermore, I noticed that my natural waves were much more pronounced after using this shampoo for a good few weeks, so I would say that this would be great for those wanting to add volume to their hair and bring out the natural kink that they may have.

Despite preferring the scent of this, I still prefer Odango overall as I think it is more suited for my type of hair and produces better, more noticeable results.  However, my 100g block of Hairy Mcclairy has barely shrunk since I began using it almost a month ago, and I can envisage it lasting me another two months, making it really good value for money. And while it didn't make my hair look and feel as lovely as others have done, it is still a great shampoo to use and will be one I go back to when I'm building in some volume during the colder months of the year.

Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Stearic Acid, Water (Aqua), Glyceryl Stearate & PEG 100 Stearate, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Perfume, Organic Lemon Myrtle Oil (Backhousia Citriodora), Lime Oil (Citrus aurantifolia), Ylang Ylang Oil (Cananga odorata), Soya Lecithin, Star Anise (Lilciim verum),

Apandapand Soap

Whether it's just the excitement of all of the brand new products that Lush have brought out recently, the innovation that has gone into producing these new products or a change in ingredients, but I'm finding myself really enjoying most of the new soaps that Lush are currently selling in their flagship store.

Apandapand happens to be the last of the new soaps that I picked up - not managing to grab myself a slice until my fourth visit. This wasn't intentional at all, merely the luck of the draw when it came to which ones I made a grab for when I passed the soap counter in the Oxford Street store. However, almost immediately after I began using the product in the shower, I regretted not purchasing it sooner, and here's why.

Described by Lush as a 'citrusy, grapefruit soap', this product does and smells exactly as you would imagine. Containing fresh grapefruit juice as well as grapefruit oil and lemon oil, this beautiful product has a light, crisp and very sour fruity aroma. If you imagine juicing a ripe grapefruit first thing in the morning and adding a pinch of lemon, you'll have a good indication of what this soap smells like.
Apandapand also features litsea cubeba oil - a component that I had not come across before I began using this product. After a little research, I discovered that this oil is derived from a May Chang tree, where the pepper-shaped fruits have their oils extracted and used throughout the cosmetics industry in a variety of ways. While the ingredient boasts many benefits, its citrus, 'lemonesque' scent is immediately uplifting and rejuvenating, which makes it very useful for combating emotional problems and psychological issues: a much-needed support system, especially in the early mornings.

While some would argue that it's a very two-dimensional fragrance, I love the fact that it's neither cloying nor too heavy on the senses. Much like Bohemian or Baked Alaska, this is the perfect morning companion as it'll leave you feeling and smelling squeaky clean while delivering a scent that will invigorate your senses and stimulate your mind, readying you for the day ahead.

Designed to replicate that of a pink grapefruit, when Amandapand is cut into slices, you're left with a pink, white and yellow block of colour - a beautiful product that looks rather lovely and inviting in your soap dish.

In the shower, this product is very easy to lather up and I have found that a 100g block would easily last me for a good month, this is using it every day. The soap produces a generous, velvety-soft foam, which works wonderfully at cleaning your skin and leaving it feeling positively glowing. Despite the abundance, I was also pleased to discover that my chunk didn't noticeably shrink between uses, making this great value for money in the long run.

As I said above, this is a great soap for those hotter months - when you want something cleaning but uplifting and refreshing in the shower, and this is a soap that does exactly that. It works well at calming oily skin and balancing out levels of secretion without drying it out, so this works well for people of all skin types.

Although I don't tend to use many soaps as I much prefer jellies and gels, this is definitely one that I would use again and I may even stock up on it during my next visit - hopefully preparing myself for the hotter weather that we're going to get over the coming months.

Quantitative Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerine, Rapeseed Oil: Coconut Oil (Brassica napus: Cocos nucifera), Sorbitol, Fresh Grapefruit Juice (Citrus paradisi), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Stearate, Grapefruit Oil (Citrus paradisi), Sicilian Lemon Oil (Citrus limonum), Litsea Cubeba Oil, Sodium Chloride, Titanium Dioxide, Gardenia Extract (Gardenia jasminoides), EDTA, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Sodium Hydroxide, Perfume, Citral, Limonene, Colour 45350, Colour 14700, Colour 17200, Colour 45410.

Wash You Were Here Washcard

It's times like these when I wish my gut-instinct was far stronger than my compelling need to own everything Lush-related. Despite finding the Don't Rain On My Parade Shower Sheet to be nothing more than a mere novelty, I still found myself picking up the other variations when I next visited the store.

One of two 'wash cards', Wash You Were Here is smaller than the shower sheets and comes in at the size of a postcard, hence the name. Aside from the different fragrances that each of these paper gels offer, the size seems to be the only main difference between the sheet and the card.

As with all of Lush's new innovative shower sheets, this product is made from a combination of dried honeydew melon and an array of essential oils. Simply tear off a small piece (about the size of the circumference of one of Lush's solid perfume tins) and add a little water to the mix. The sheet will foam up rather quickly and produce a creamy lather that can then be massaged across the body.

Containing bergamot, lemon and mandarin oils, this wash card has a wonderfully light, refreshing but very comforting citrus aroma - one with a powdery, decadent element as well. While I recognised the scent from the get-go, it took me a few uses to realise that this product shares its scent with the popular Olive Branch Shower Gel

Although not a straightforward replica, fans of this fragrance family will no doubt this product as it is far more creamier and richer than previous incarnations have offered. Furthermore, as the gel is is known for its thin and very runny consistency, I thought that the sheet actually offered more longevity than a 100g bottle of the shower gel would. For this reason, I would be tempted to buy a few more of these in the near future instead of the usual shower gel.

Much like my first experience, I was initially concerned with the £4.95 price tag that this wash card comes in at. Although it's far cheaper than the shower sheets, it's still quite expensive for what is ultimately a thin slice of melon. Priced up the same as a 100g bottle of the shower gel, I was expecting Wash You Were Here Shower to be either reusable or resilient to water so it would have a longer shelf life in my bathroom. Unfortunately, I found that once the product got wet, it disintegrated rather quickly and there was no way I would have been able to reuse the piece I had taken into the shower with me. While it definitely had more to offer than the DROMP variation, it was still a short-lived experience.

Having said this, the foam was easy to use and offered me a wonderful, fragrant cream that left a really strong impression on my skin. I was pleased to find that I could still smell this some four hours after I had left the shower and I even picked up whiffs of the smell throughout the day. While on the surface this card seems on par with the other releases, I think this particular one has far more promise than I was initially expecting.

Lush Cocktail: Bathin' In Gold

Lynnea's 'Bathing' In Gold' Cocktail

Contains:

Video:

Verdict:

Sometimes you just need to feel like royalty, and after a rotten day at work, I just needed a bath that would not only wash away my stress and anxiety, but rekindle some of the bounce I had lost in my step. Bathin' In Gold Cocktail sounded like the percent remedy - a rich and very bright-smelling collaboration that would leave my skin feeling and smelling like a million pounds.

While I have used quite a lot of product for this cocktail, you could easily halve both the bath bombs and still get an incredible result. Furthermore, I found that the scent of Golden Egg was somewhat thwarted next to the other ingredients, so you could even opt to remove this altogether and still have an experience worthy of a royal vote.

To create this cocktail, you must first crumble half of a Sunnyside under the running tap. As I have stated before, this is quite a stubborn bubble bar, even when fresh, so you may find it easier to crumble it before running your bath or as I did, hold it under the tap and let the water soften it. This cocktail favourite gives off a strong orangey aroma and turns the water a warming gentle shade of yellow. It also fills the tub with swirls of golden lustre, which may look like a nightmare for glitter-phobes, but in reality is not very messy at all.

Up next, you can either hold a small slab of Pot O' Gold Shower Jelly under the tap or transfer it into a sieve and hold that under the running water. While the scent of this is really strong, the jelly is used more as a way to stimulate a few extra bubbles and make the water an even softer experience.

Once the bath has be run, add in the Golden Egg Bath Bomb. This is a slow dissolver - sending out beautiful, creamy toffee-scented oils across the surface of the water and deepening the colour of the water to a beautiful golden shade. This bath bomb is also packed with butters to turn the water into a haven of moisture that'll leave your skin feeling as smooth as a babys.

As I mentioned above, you don't have to include the whole egg if you're savouring your products - half is more than sufficient to make this cocktail amazing. Or, you can opt to leave this out completely as I don't think it's absence would be missed all that much.

Finally, add in your Dragon's Egg and watch as it bleeds a thick blanket of fragrant foam into the water. Packed full of citrus oils, this sherbert-lemon scented bath bomb helps to create an uplifting and very refreshing experience. Both Sunnyside and Dragon's Egg compliment each other perfectly - creating a stunning bath full of colour and fragrance.

This bath cocktail left me feeling like a new person. My skin felt incredible, I smelt like a goddess and my mood was completely transformed from when I had first submerged myself beneath the golden waves. This is the perfect summer bath and one I will be using over and over again.
